Students work towards the doctoral degree in Biochemistry. Programs of study involve a combination of required and elective courses coupled to a schedule of laboratory rotations tailored to individual interests and needs. On admission to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree students conduct research under the guidance of one or more members of the faculty on projects of contemporary importance selected on recommendation of an advisory committee. These faculty can be chosen from any of the members of our faculty including joint-appointees. The results of research on the problem selected are presented in a dissertation submitted to the faculty. The overall objective is the development of a creative research scientist by providing an intellectual environment in which independence of thought is promoted and narrow specialization avoided.
To receive full consideration, please submit completed applications by December 15 for admission in the fall of the following year. However, we will continue to accept applications through January 15.
Note: Stipends are $24,500 for the current 2008-2009 school year.
For foreign students, an evaluation of all foreign credentials that have been completed by an outside evaluation service must be submitted before you can be admitted. Some outside evaluation services are WES - World Educational Service, AACRAO and IERF. Ask for a document by document or a course by course evaluation. You need to allow time for these services to complete their reports and send them to us, so plan ahead. Further information for graduate students from foreign countries is available.
Remember that the Department supports any U.S. or foreign student who is accepted with a full stipend plus tuition and fees.
You can get an application on the Graduate School Home Page and can apply on-line at (On-Line application).
