COMIRB 04-1101 / GCRC 1472: "Sex- and Disease-Dependent Nucleoside Analog Toxicity."

Study Design

This study will compare the drug levels of Retrovir® plus Epivir® or Zerit® plus Epivir® in blood cells according to whether the person is HIV-infected with high or low CD4 cell counts, or not HIV-infected. The study will also compare the drug levels in men versus women. Drug levels will be measured during 11 potential visits over a 2 year time period. This study does not influence usual drug therapy or HIV care. Eligible participants will use their own supply of HIV medication for the study. Compensation will be provided.

Eligibility Criteria

Documented HIV infection with CD4 cell counts above 300 or below 100
Age 18-55 years
Not currently on HIV drug therapy, but ready to start therapy that contains zidovudine, (ZDV, Retrovir®) plus lamivudine (3TC, Epivir®) or stavudine (d4T, Zerit®) plus Epivir®
Not currently taking birth control pills
