Gathering Needle Shear Properties
Purpose:
To Ensure the haptic accuracy of our needle insertion
simulators we have begun an effort to gather shear-data from needles inserted
into human tissue.
System Setup:
The system will measure the load between the
needle, syringe and the depth of needle penetration.
The data will be available for downloading as
it is gathered. We highly encourage critical feedback to assist us in creating
the most useful data possible.

Status:
We are currently awaiting delivery
of the two Entran load cells ELPS-T1 bi-directional (+- 10 lbs) andELFS-B0
compression only (+2 lbs). The ELPS-T1 will be used to measure the load between
the needle and the syringe. The ELFS will measure the force exerted by a spring
pressing against the outermost tissue. This force will be both translated into
a depth of penetration and subtracted from the other load cell output.

This effort is generously sponsored by the Harmon
Foundation.
