LAY SUMMARY OF RESEARCH OBJECTIVES:

Our laboratory explores the relation between energy substrate (fuel) utilization and contractile (pumping) function of the heart. In particular, we use animal models of simulated heart attack to determine if specific drugs can help to preserve the function of the heart.

Clinical: We are exploring new and expanded applications of lipid-lowering drugs in cardiovascular disease. A recently completed international multicenter trial demonstrated that intensive lipid-lowering therapy, initiated soon after a heart attack or threatened heart attack, significantly reduces early complications including death, another heart attack, recurrent hospitalization for chest pain, or stroke.
