Division Head, Michael Bristow, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine
The
Division of Cardiology is headed by Michael Bristow, MD with Cardiology
Programs at University of Colorado Hospital, Denver Health Medical Center,
Denver Veterans Administration
Medical Center, and Columbia Rose Medical Center. The components of Division
of Cardiology work together in a cohesive academic environment to provide
comprehensive cardiac care of patients. The following specialized programs
are available, many of which are centrally located in the Heart Center.
The Heart Failure Treatment Program, which was started in 1991, is aimed at the advanced treatment of patients with heart failure and muscle degeneration. This program under the direction of Brian Lowes, MD, offers both medical and surgical treatment. The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center is one of the leading academic heart failure facilities in the world offering access to investigational drug therapies and diagnostic techniques not available at other medical centers. The Heart Transplant Program, headed by JoAnn Lindenfeld, MD is completely integrated with the Heart Failure Program providing continuity of care from the initial referral for heart failure treatment to evaluation of transplant and post-transplant management. There have been 255 heart transplants performed from 1986 through 2001 with a survival rate that’s among the best in the world.
Robert Quaife, MD, was recruited here in 1992 to serve as Director of the Advanced Imaging Program and is board certified in both Nuclear Medicine and Cardiology. His goal has been to amalgamate two large academic units, Radiology and Cardiology, which makes optimal use of noninvasive imaging modalities in cardiac diagnosis and treatment. Assisting Dr. Quaife is Howard Weinberger, MD, Co-Director of Echocardiography, which includes the ability to do exercise pharmacological stress echoes and transesophageal echoes.
The Electrophysiology Program (EP) has extensive experience in surgical treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and other interventional procedures including the latest modalities in defibrillator pacing. This program was initiated at University of Colorado Denver under the direction of Michael Reiter, MD in 1988 and was the first EP program in the Rocky Mountain Region. Today, under the direction of David Mann, MD, it is considered one of the leading research and clinical electrophysiology programs within the United States.
The Interventional Cardiology Program with the Advanced Cardiac Catheterization Program consists of a well-trained highly motivated team providing both diagnosis and treatment for patients with suspected coronary artery disease and other cardiac disorders. John Carroll, MD, director of this program, is a noted researcher in interventional cardiology, valvuloplasty, and other cardiac disorders. His leadership has brought new dimensions for the care of patients with heart disease.

The Temple Hoyne Buell Heart Center Laboratories for Research in Molecular Cardiology are dedicated to the research of molecular and genetic research of Heart Failure. Dr. Michael Bristow serves as director for this center which continues to provide noted research advancements. These advancements have earned the stature for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center to be considered as one of the outstanding academic research medical centers in the world for treatment of heart disease. The newly formed University of Colorado Cardiovascular Institute (CU-CVI) formalizes the working relationship between the CU research performed on the Boulder campus and the Division of Cardiology at UCD. Dr. Leslie Leinwand, Chair of the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at University of Colorado Boulder campus and Dr. Michael Bristow serve as Co-Directors of this Institute which will enhance the abilities for greater industry support and approach non-NHLB/NIH institute grants.
The strength of the Cardiology Division extends to the affiliated hospitals. At Denver Health Medical Center, Carlin Long, MD heads an outstanding clinical and academic unit that delivers cardiac care to the patient population of one of the premier city/county hospitals in the United States. At Denver Veterans Administration Hospital, Gregory Schwartz, MD is Chief of an established group of outstanding academicians and clinicians who provide care for the region’s veteran population. Dr. Eugene Wolfel, Clinical Chief at UCH, heads an outstanding group of clinicians with advanced specialized clinical programs providing state of the art care to patients in the Rocky Mountain Region. The activities of the Cardiology Division are intricately interwoven among the faculty of the three main teaching hospitals and the CU-CVI.. For example, Dr. Long is the Principal Investigator for the Cardiology Division Training Grant, which includes research and educational funding for Fellows working in laboratories of the division members based at any of the above training sites. Several Clinical Programs are jointly administered and run in all three of the hospitals, including the catheterization laboratory-based Interventional Cardiology Program and Electrophysiology Program.
