Fourth Quarter 2007 News

 

Recent Departmental Awards for New/Innovative Educational Programs-Several members of the Department have recently been notified of the receipt of significant financial support for unique educational programs. These awards substantially extend the Department’s and School of Medicine’s depth and breadth of educational and training opportunities. Please extend congratulations to your colleagues for developing and obtaining funding for the following programs:

Tom Campbell, M.D. (Infectious Diseases)–Tom received a new NIH T-32 award, “Colorado HIV-1 Research Training Program” to support post-doctoral training in HIV/AIDS-related research. The program will support awards for HIV/AIDS-related basic, translational and clinical training at UCD asnd affiliated institutions including UCB, CSU and UNC. The grant will support up to 3 trainees for periods of 1-2 years.

Judy Regensteiner, Ph.D. (General Internal Medicine/Cardiology)-Judy was the recipient of a new NIH K12 award for “Building Interdisciplinary Careers in Women’s Health.” This $2,500,000 five year award will fund the salaries of four junior faculty (two MD and two PhD) for scholarship in issues involving women’s health.

Mark Geraci, M.D. (Pulmonary/Critical care)-was awarded a new NIH K12 award for “Career Development in the Genetics and Genomics of Lung Diseases.” This $2,000,000 5-year award will position scholars for independent clinical research using genetics and genomics techniques in lung disease.

Mark Earnest, M.D. (General Internal Medicine)- Mark was awarded $220,000 by the Colorado Health Foundation for the CU LEADS (Leadership, Education, Advocacy, Development, Scholarship) program. Mark originally established this program via a HRSA grant several years ago and the program has subsequently been supported by the Rose Community Foundation. The Program is a joint effort of Medicine and Pediatrics (Shale Wong, M.D.) and provides medical students and houseofficers with training in leadership and advocacy.

 

Departmental Faculty Named Among Denver’s Top Docs by Denver’s 5280 Magazine-Please extend your congratulations to the following members of the Department who were recognized in the October, 2007 edition of 5280 magazine as being voted by their peers as one of Denver’s “Top Docs”: Chris Gilroy (PSL)-Adolescent Medicine, JoAnn Lindenfeld-Cardiology, Steve Frankel (NJH)-Critical Care, Dan Bessesen (DHHA)-Endocrinology, Mike McDermott-Endocrinology, Jeff Wallace-Geriatrics, Robin Yasui (DHHA)-Geriatrics, Kathy Hassell-Hematology, Mark Earnest-Internal Medicine, Larry Feinberg-Internal Medicine, Phil Mehler (DHHA)-Internal Medicine, John Carroll-Interventional Cardiology, Matt Taylor-Medical Genetics, Stu Linas (DHHA)-Nephrology, David Collier (DHHA)-Rheumatology, Sterling West-Rheumatology, Richard Meehan (NJH)-Rheumatology, Teofilio Lee-Chiong (NJH)-Sleep Medicine, and Cecile Rose (NJH)-Occupational Medicine.

 

Recent Departmental Faculty Recognition-Several Departmental faculty members have recently either received recognition for outstanding efforts or have assumed significant new responsibilities. Among these are:

Kelly White, M.D.-was recently recognized by the Society of General Internal Medicine’s Mountain West section as their “Outstanding Clinical Educator of the Year” awardee.

Jeff Glasheen, M.D.-is the 2007 recipient of the Society of Hospital Medicine’s annual Award for Teaching Excellence (one awarded yearly on a national basis). Jeff has also been named the Editor of “The Hospitalist,” the newsmagazine of the Society of Hospital Medicine and was also named as the Society of Hospital Medicine’s representative to the ABIM task force on credentialing of hospitalists.

Todd Bull, M.D.-has recently been appointed to the position of Head of Internal Medicine Clinical Services at the Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion (AIP). In this new role, Todd will be working with University Hospital, the Chief Medical Resident and the Chair of Medicine on clinical issues at the AIP.

John Messenger, M.D.-has been named as one of 19 recipients sharing a $5 million dollar grant from AHRQ designed to improve patient quality and safety through simulation research.

Jean Kutner, M.D., M.S.P.H.-was awarded an Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine award for 2007 by the Hedwig van Amerigen Program. This is the nation’s only in-depth program focused on preparing senior women faculy to move into institutional leadership positions.
