Bio
Dr. Bemis has been actively conducting research in the Division of Medical Oncology for eight years. Her research focus is on cancer biomarkers for early detection, diagnosis or prognosis. Her current research interests include microRNA as biomarkers and the use of Nanotechnology for cancer detection.
Research
Dr. Bemis works closely with the melanoma and lung cancer programs to bring laboratory discoveries to clinical application. Current projects include studies of microRNA in melanoma and lung cancer. MicroRNAs are small regulatory RNAs that regulate large programs of protein expression in all human cells but can be especially important in regulating pathways in cancer as well as being tissue specific, an advantage when considering their use as biomarkers. Dr. Bemis is also working in the cutting edge field applying nanotechnology to cancer biomarkers. Her recent focus in the nanotechnology area applies gold nanoparticles to the detection of point mutations in tumor tissue. The focus of her program is to develop biomarkers for earlier cancer detection, diagnosis and prognosis.
