DIVISION OF RENAL DISEASES AND HYPERTENSION

Division Head, Tomas Berl, MD, The Robert and Elaine Collins Professor of Medicine

The Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension with the assistance of faculty, fellows, research assistants, nurses, and administrative staff has maintained a very high level of activity in all areas of academic medicine. The Division has active clinical inpatient and outpatient programs at three hospitals (University of Colorado Hospital, Denver Health Medical Center, and Denver VA Medical Center). A recent U.S. News and World Report survey of 1700 hospitals ranked nephrology at the University of Colorado Hospital as 4th in the nation.The kidney transplant program, led by Laurence Chan, MD, in association with the surgical team of Igal Kam, MD, has outcomes in the top 10% in the country. Similarly, the chronic hemodialysis program, led by Dr. David Spiegel, has survival statistics far above the national average. 

The renal faculty consistently receives medical student and housestaff teaching awards, particularly Stuart Linas, MD, who is the Director of the training program. Dr. Robert Schrier is Editor of the Manual of Nephrology, Renal and Electrolyte Disorders, Diseases of the Kidney (3 volumes), and the Atlas of Renal Diseases (5 volumes). 

The Division conducts clinical studies in type 1 and 2 diabetes (Drs. Berl and Schrier), polycystic disease (Drs. Godela Fick-Brosnahan, Edelstein, and Schrier), edematous disorders (Drs. Jani, Edelstein, Cadnapaphornchai, and Schrier), acute renal failure (Drs. Edelstein and Schrier), transplantation (Drs. Chan and Wiseman), chronic renal failure (Drs. Speigel and Chonchol), and peritoneal dialysis (Dr. Teitelbaum). 

Raphael Nemenoff, PhD, is Director of the basic science research program. Basic research studies in vasospressin release and action (Berl, Nemenoff, Heasley, Cadnapaphornchai, Umenishi, and Schrier) and polycystic kidney disease (Drs. Edelstein and Schrier).The funding includes two NIH program project grants and several NIH individual grants.

Divisional faculty have been elected to several national and international leadership positions: President of the American Society of Nephrology, International Society of Nephrology, and National Kidney Foundation (Dr. Schrier); American Society of Nephrology Council and future President (Dr. Berl); ABIM Nephrology Committee and Chair of the American Society Nephrology Training Directors Committee (Dr. Linas).
