James M. Falko , M.D. Professor of Medicine-Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, Professor of General Medicine-University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center

Dr. Falko received his medical degree from Ohio State University in 1971. He served his internship, residency, and chief residency in internal medicine at Ohio State, then completed a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism and a fellowship in preventive medicine at Washington University-Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, and Clinical Lipidology.

Previously he was Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus. He also served as Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at Ohio State. Dr. Falko has been a practicing internist/endocrinologist/lipidologist since 1979 and has served as Director of the Lipid Program both at Ohio State as well as the McConnell Heart Center at Ohio Health.

Dr. Falko has written over 100 articles, including original research and scientific reviews on lipid disorders, diabetes and related disorders for peer-reviewed journals. He has authored several book chapters on the relationship between cardiovascular disease and diabetes. He has served on editorial boards of various journals, including the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. He has also served as program director of endocrinolology as well as general internal medicine in the past.

Dr. Falko has headed a number of academic council societies; he is a fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE), American College of Cardiology (FACC), and the American College of Physicians (FACP)). He has received numerous teaching and academic awards throughout his career, including the US Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service, the James and Dorothy S. Hutton Traveling Scholarship of the American College of Physicians for his year at the University of London Medical school and St. Mary's Hospital, the Lifetime Achievement Distinguished Service Award by the Central Ohio Diabetes Association in 2001, and the Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians in 2003.

Presently Dr. Falko is involved in leadership roles in the National Lipid Association. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Lipidology and Future Lipidology. His research interest is in Preventive Cardiology, Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Atherosclerosis.
