Associate Program Directors

Mel Anderson, MD is from Houston, Texas, where he graduated AOA from Medical School at the University of Texas. He then pursued residency training, a chief resident year, and three additional staff years at David Grant USAF Medical Center in Northern California before moving to Rhode Island for four years. He was on staff at the Providence VA and on the faculty of Brown Medical School. Mel’s outside interests include spending time with his spouse Maria and 5 year old daughter Claire; motorcycle riding, rock climbing, and skiing. Dr Anderson’s focus for the residency is Evidence Based Medicine and Communication skills.

Virginia Borges, MD was born in New Jersey and educated there through medical school, graduating AOA from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She completed residency in Internal Medicine at the Deaconess Hospital and clinical fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She has a Master’s of Medical Science in Clinical Investigation from Harvard Medical School and performed her laboratory research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute focusing on cancer vaccine development. She was on staff at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and faculty at Harvard Medical School until 2003 when she joined the faculty here as a breast cancer clinical translational researcher in the Division of Oncology. She and her husband, Andre, have two sons, Nicholas and Rene, and are avid fly-fishers. Dr. Borges oversees the research program and is instrumental in helping residents successfully pursue subspecialty fellowships.
Warren Capell, MD is from Seattle, Washington. He
graduated from the University of Washington School of Medicine before coming to the University of Colorado for Internal Medicine residency training. He remained here at UCDHSC to complete fellowship training in Endocrinology and subsequently joined the faculty, focusing on research in lipid metabolism, insulin resistance, and heart disease. He has recently shifted his spectrum of research experience and currently serves as a co-chair for the Colorado Multiple Institutional Review Board, helping to oversee human subject research. Cappy enjoys playing volleyball, spending time with his wife and daughter, traveling, eating BBQ, and anything that combines traveling with eating BBQ. His focus within the residency program is in helping residents gain valuable research experience and pursue subspecialty fellowship training.
Karen Chacko, MD was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She attended Medical School at UC San Diego. She completed her internship, residency and chief residency here at the University of Colorado. She has been GIM faculty here since completing her training. She is the mother of two bright and beautiful young girls and enjoys hiking, running, camping, and reading. Dr. Chacko is the director of the Primary Care track.

Jeffrey Glasheen, MD graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and came to Denver to complete his Internal Medicine training at the University of Colorado. After a three year stint as a hospitalist at the Denver VA Medical Center he became the director of the hospital medicine program at the University of Colorado Hospital. With the help of his hospitalist colleagues he has developed and directed the longest running Hospitalist Training Program in the country. Outside of the hospital he enjoys running, reading and relaxing; with an unnerving tendency towards the later. Dr. Glasheen oversees the hospitalist program and is Director of Clinical Services for the Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado Hospital.
