Chief Residents

Gabriel Brooks, M.D.

Gabriel Brooks, MD was born in New Hampshire and grew up near Bangor, Maine.  He attended Dartmouth College as an undergraduate and received his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania.  Gabriel came to Denver in 2006 to complete his internal medicine residency, where he has engaged in research in the Division of Oncology writing a protocol to investigate varying strategies of anti-angiogenic therapy in breast cancer.  As chief resident, Gabriel will focus on providing an outstanding training experience and environment for current University of Colorado internal medicine residents.  In 2010, Gabriel will start as a fellow in Hematology and Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Center, where he hopes to build a career in oncology outcomes research.  Gabriel is married to Jessica, who is a resident in Emergency Medicine at Denver Health Hospital, and spends his spare time exploring the roads and trails of the Colorado high country on bicycle, foot and skis.

 

Katie Heist, M.D.

Katie Heist grew up near Philadelphia, PA.  When she was in high school, her family moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and since that time she has always wanted to move to the Rocky Mountain area.  She majored in Biology at Dartmouth College, graduating in 2001.  She spent a year in Boston, MA doing research on the metabolic role of leptin.  She moved to Colorado in 2002 and received her medical degree from the University of Colorado in 2006.  She was in the Primary Care Track during residency and continues to be involved in the Primary Care Track.  As chief resident, Katie will focus on optimizing resident education.  Following residency, Katie plans to work as a primary care physician in Denver.  Outside the hospital, Katie enjoys spending as much time outside as possible.  She frequently runs in the evening at Washington Park.  She also enjoys hiking during the summer and snowshoeing during the winter.

 

Janice Huang, M.D.

Janice Huang, MD was born and raised in Greeley, Colorado. She attended the University of Colorado at Boulder as an undergraduate and received a degree in Chemical Engineering. After receiving her medical degree at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, she continued her internal medicine training in Colorado. During residency she has been involved with basic science research looking at the responses of the right and left ventricle to phenylephrine. Janice will begin her cardiology fellowship at the University of Colorado in July of 2010, and continue her research in right ventricular failure. During her chief resident year, she aims to focus not only on resident education, but also on providing resources to the residents so they can accomplish cutting edge research during their internal medicine training. Janice lives with her husband, Dan, and her dog, Meena.

 

Daniel Jamieson, M.D.

Daniel Jamieson, MD grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland.  He majored in Psychology at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, graduating in 1999.  After college Dan joined the Channing Laboratory at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he worked on a study evaluating the effects of indoor and outdoor pollution on the incidence of asthma and allergy in children.  He subsequently enrolled in the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in Manhattan.  Upon graduation, he moved west with his wife, and embarked upon a residency in internal medicine at the University of Colorado.  In July 2010, he will return to his roots on the east coast as a fellow in Pulmonary and Critical Care at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.  His professional interests include clinical outcomes research in the ICU, and he hopes to develop a career in academic medicine.  As a chief resident, Dan is focusing on resident and medical student education.  When not in the hospital, Dan enjoys hiking, snowboarding and spending time with his wife, Jennie, and their son, Elijah.

 

Alexandra Smart, M.D.

Alexandra Smart, MD was born in Denver and has never found a compelling reason to leave the beautiful state of Colorado for any significant length of time.  She received her dual degrees in biology and French Literature at the University of Colorado and spent a year doing molecular biology research in Paris, France.  During and after college, Alex worked in the University of Colorado Denver Endocrinology Division on various basic science and clinical research projects including designing a radioimmunoassay for mouse TSH.  She continued the CU tradition by attending medical school here and staying for residency.  During residency, Alex embarked on a clinical research study looking into characteristics of alcohol abuse in ICU patients and their significant others.  In 2010, Alex will start her Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellowship here at the University of Colorado and looks forward to a career in academics.  As a chief resident she is focusing on education and personal growth of residents and medical students.  In her spare time Alex enjoys spending time with her husband Dan, a police officer, and their daughter Sawyer.
