The categorical program is the backbone of our residency training. The program emphasizes outstanding clinical training in a diversity of patient care settings with graduated responsibility and a supportive educational structure. in addition to required inpatient rotations, all residents complete two months of day float, a geriatrics rotation, an ambulatory care rotation, a neurology rotation and two months of emergency medicine. Residents have numerous elective opportunities in the medicine subspecialties and a variety of other relevant areas.

Residents are well prepared for subsequent fellowship training or to enter the physician workforce after completing the categorical program which offers increasing flexibility with less requirements and more elective time in each subsequent year. From this strong clinical base, residents can tailor their education based on their interests and career goals and/or they may opt into one of our more focused educational offerings; primary care, hospitalist medicine or research.
