Ten (10) Travel Awards of $500 each are once again being funded by an NIH Meeting Grant to the University of Colorado MST Program. The intent of these travel awards is to increase the attendance of diversity students to the National MD/PhD Student Conference. Diversity students are broadly defined by the NIH to include first generation college attendees, attendees with a rural background, or attendees with the following ethnic identities: African American, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaska Native, Southeast Asian, or Pacific Islander.
Recipients of the 10 Travel Awards will be chosen on a competitive basis by a review committee. The key criteria for selection will be the Abstract submitted by the Diversity applicant describing his/her recent scientific work.
For incoming and 1st year MD/PhD students, this can be research work completed as undergraduates or technicians, whereas more senior MD/PhD students should submit work accomplished either during a laboratory rotation or as part of their thesis project.
If the chosen awardee has already registered for the meeting, a reimbursement check in the amount of $500.00 will be processed for his or her institution. If the chosen awardee has not already registered for the conference, our organizing committee will register the student and we will defray the registration fee. A check in the amount of $250.00 will then be processed to reimburse travel and/or hotel expenses.
Melvin Denis was an MD/PhD student at the University of Utah who regularly attended the National MD/PhD Student Conference.
He was a vivacious, outgoing, hardworking student who made a memorable impact on those around him. Melvin was awarded a
Diversity Travel Award to attend the 2004 conference and as always made a valuable contribution to the conference. We lost Melvin
on December 12th 2004 to an avalanche in the backcountry of Utah, which he loved to frequent. In his honor we have established this
special diversity travel award in his name. This award will recognize a student who represents some of the qualities important to Melvin,
such as a dedicated passion for science and a commitment to diversity in the sciences. The student selected for this award will be chosen
from those applying for the diversity travel awards. The recipient of this award will be chosen to share their work in an oral presentation
and recognized at the conference.
