Each year, the University of Colorado Medical Scientist Training Program sponsors and organizes the National MD/PhD Student Conference. Organized by the 3rd year MSTP students, the conference provides an opportunity for MD/PhD students to present their work to and interact with other MD/PhD students and prominent scientific investigators.
It is with great pleasure that the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Colorado at Denver, Anchutz Medical Campus invites you to the 23rd Annual National MD/PhD Student Conference. This year’s conference will take place July 18th-20th in Keystone, Colorado. Over the past 22 years, the conference has brought MD/PhD students from across the U.S. and Canada to Colorado to share their research, hear featured speakers, participate in small groups, interact with a career panel and enjoy the Rocky Mountains. Participants have the unique opportunity to network with their fellow MD/PhD students, meet leading researchers, and consider the evolving role of the physician scientist.
As in the past, we have invited a group of distinguished speakers from a variety of disciplines. These featured lectures will address topics in both basic science and translational research. This year we are excited to include Drs. James Allison, Nancy Andrews, Brigid Hogan, William Wagner, and Tadataka Yamada as our keynote speakers. In addition, the student oral presentations and poster sessions will ensure that a wide spectrum of topics are discussed including, but not limited to, immunology, tumor biology, biochemistry, microbiology, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, developmental biology, and global health research. The career panel will include physicians and scientists from industry and academia who will offer a variety of perspectives on career development for MD/PhD students. Finally, we will have breakout group sessions encompassing various topics of interest to MD/PhD students.
There are several exciting changes and additions to this year’s conference. Our meeting will be held at the Keystone Lodge instead of the Conference Center. The Lodge has more of a mountain town atmosphere while still allowing high quality space for oral and poster presentations and has great spaces for small group sessions. The Saturday night dinner will be held at the Mountain House Restaurant at the base of the Keystone ski slopes-views are breathtaking and this will be a truly unique Colorado ski town experience. The registration web site this year includes an option for contacting other students interested in sharing lodging, to help minimize costs.
As always, the conference provides free time to enjoy the spectacular surroundings of Keystone. Summit County, including nearby cities of Keystone, Dillon, Silverthorne and Breckenridge, allows for shopping, outdoor exploration, and social gatherings after hours. Hiking, mountain biking and other adventure activities are conveniently located near the conference site.
Every year, approximately ten diversity travel awards are given out to conference attendees. We strongly encourage students to apply for this $500 award that covers registration and travel expenses. Consideration is given consistent with the NIH guidelines for minority recruitment. Be sure your travel plans allow for attending all poster sessions and keynote lectures which begin at 5 pm on Friday and continue through 9 pm on Sunday. When making hotel reservations, please use reservation code CN3MST8, so that your registration is associated with the conference.
We hope that you will join us at this year’s conference and find it a valuable experience like that of past attendees. Please contact conference organizers at 2008MDPHD@gmail.com with any questions.
Sincerely,
The 2008 Organizing Committee
