How to use the vertical scanner to scan your teaching file
Before you start---You must create a file for yourself in either Ed’s computer downstairs next to his office, or in the computer in the second floor conference room. Either one, the procedure is similar:
- When you touch the mouse, the screen will tell you to do "Control-Alt-Del" to start;
- Username is "radiologist"
- Password is "xray1212"
- Case does matter! - all lower case
- On Ed’s computer, when appropriate, make sure the box for "Desktop Workstation Only" is checked or else your log on won’t be valid.
- Under Start, go to Program, then Window’s NT Explorer, then "E," then "People."
- Under "People", you can then create a folder by going under "File---New---Folder"
Opening the server---Once you’ve created your folder, you’re ready to receive images.
- Log on to the computer as instructed above
- Click on "Dicom Server" icon on your desktop screen
- A grayish box will appear. Click "Change directory for image"
- Choose your folder. You may have to start from localizing E, and go from there.
- Hit "Save" at the right lower corner of the directory box when you’re done choosing your folder
- Screen will go back to the gray box of Dicom server. Now hit "start server."
- Now you’re ready to scan and receive images.
- A new gray box will pop up with the option to close server - use this when you are done.
Scanning---The room is next to the file room on second floor, the same room in which the technologists send images to TCH.
- The computer should always be on the Kodak screen.
- There are nine icons in a row at the right upper corner. The ones you need to know are the following:
- Icon #1 - scan
- Icon #4 - transmit--satellite
- Icon #6 - folder
- Icon #9 - exit - looks like a door half open
- Next line down, starting from left to right:
- You need to choose resolution - 1024 is adequate for most things
- Then choose film size - eg. 14x17 is a regular chest film size
- Then choose Portrait vs. Landscape. Portrait is like a PA chest, Landscape
is like an AP chest with the film turned horizontally.
- Create your file by clicking on "folder," icon #6.
- A new screen will come up. You’ll only need to enter information for patient I.D., first name, and Accession #. You can name them all the same name such as case A, or case 1, etc. Avoid using the actual diagnosis as names because they will show up on the big screen when you’re choosing the next case during your PC.
- After you’ve entered the above information, hit "Save" button, the left-most one on the right upper corner of the screen
- Screen now will go back to the screen you started with. Now, make sure the file you just created is highlighted by clicking on it. If you don’t see your file, the entire list may be sorted by alphabet, and you can either scroll down until you see it, or change the sorter to "recent first."
- Now you’re ready to scan.
- When scanning in "portrait" format, flip the film 180 degrees from looking at it correctly; insert the film into the scanner vertically.
- When scanning in "landscape," you still have to scan the film the same way, but you may need to play with the image after scanning by clicking on the image, then using the 90 degree, 180 degree, and horizontal and vertical arrows at the top left corner of the screen to flip it the right way.
- Click on Scan - icon #1
- Screen will change to show you the product of scanning.
- Continue to scan until all images for that folder are scanned by repeating the above steps. The scan button will now be in the middle of the top of the screen.
- When all images are scanned, hit Transmit, which is the satellite button next to the scan button. The images will be transmitted to your folder under the server that you opened.
- Make sure that you choose the right server to send the images to:
- For the second floor conference, check "Conference room,"
- For Ed’s computer, check "backhall."
- Make sure all other locations are checked off, particularly TCH. Otherwise
your images will go to Children’s.
- Wait about half an hour, and all your images should be on the computer you opened the server on.
To access conference room PC from Ed’s computer:
- Under Start, choose Program, then Window’s NT Explorer, then Network Neighborhood, then Escottpc, then ConferenceE, and then your folder name.
Finally, please don’t forget to stop your server after all images are transmitted by clicking the "Stop Server" key.
