NEURORADIOLOGY CAQ EXAM
Return to Fellow Responsibilities
Fellows must keep a procedure log that will be helpful in the future application for CAQ.
Here is a copy of a prior notice for CAQ's.
THE ORAL EXAMINATION FOR CERTIFICATES OF ADDED QUALIFICATIONS
IN NEURORADIOLOGY
The oral examination in Neuroradiology will be offered at least annually to Diplomates in Radiology or Diagnostic Radiology. Diplomates in Radiation Oncology are not eligible. Successful candidates will be issued a ten year time-limited Certificate of Added Qualification in Neuroradiology.
Training Requirements
Candidates must be certified by the American Board of Radiology in Radiology or Diagnostic Radiology.
For the years 1995-1999, there are two ways of meeting the requirements:
1. Candidates will be required to have had a minimum of one year of full-time training (fellowship) in Neuroradiology following the completion of their residency training, and must have completed at least one year of practice or additional training (one-third of that time) in the subspecialty. Fellowship training must be documented by letter from the Program Director. Practice experience must be verified by letter from the Chief of Service or Department Chairman.
OR
2. Candidates who have not completed a year of training (fellowship) must have completed at least five years of active recent practice experience with a minimum of one-third of that time devoted to all aspects of neuroradiology including angiography, myelography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the head, neck, and spine. (One-third time requirement will be on the basis of 45 hour work week. Fifteen hours per week devoted exclusively to Neuroradiology satisfies the requirement). This encompasses actual participation and interpretation of examinations and procedures as well as time devoted to consultation with referring physicians, attendance at related conferences, and pre and post-procedure visits with patients. This experience must be attested to by the Chief of Service. This five years of practice experience will be acceptable only for the first five years of the examination (1995-1999).
Training Requirements (CAQ)
Candidates must present evidence of procedures performed (Experience Data) and/or other documents required by the Credentials Committee. The following number of procedures are listed as suggested guidelines to be evaluated by the Credentials Committee. 150 angiograms (selected carotid/vertebral); 50 myelograms; 7500 CT/MR of head, spine and neck
The experience Data must be verified and signed by the Chief of the Radiology Service and the Chief of Medical Staff.
Candidates finishing their fellowship in 1999 will not be required to have received their training in an accredited fellowship program.
After 1999, candidates will be required to have successfully complete one year of fellowship training after residency in a Neuroradiology program approved for such training and accredited by the ACGME and one year of practice or additional approved training in Neuroradiology.
