Fellow Goals
Back to Fellow Responsibilities
- Achieve a comprehensive understanding of all areas of neuroradiology including:
- Brain - normal anatomy and pathology imaging
- Spine and spinal cord - normal anatomy and pathology imaging
- Head and neck - normal anatomy and pathology imaging
- Fulfill requirements for CAQ; see CAQ list.
- Improve skills to a level of comfort with independence in procedures: Know indications, risks, complications
--Total, full dose myelography
--Low dose CT/myelography;
--Angiography:
-----Evaluation of carotid/vertebral/arch
-----Cerebral Angiogram: Aneurysm, AVM, WADA
- Familiarity with external carotid, pituitary sampling and neurointerventional procedures-paricularly indications, risks
- Scrub in with Dr. Kumpe in variety of Neuro-Interventional cases. Neurointerventional will be a separate fellowship. Familiarity rather than technical competence is the goal.
- Neuro-MRI
:
--Knowledge of reasoning behind standard pulse sequences
--Should be able to explain to resident basic sequence design
--Basics of magnet design - surface coils vs. body coils
--Diffusion MRI basics
--Very good understanding of MRA methods, why a particular approach is utilized
--Know how to surface render/MIP/multiplanar reconstructions
--MR contrast issues-safety, excretion,etc
--CT Physics - be able to review with residents basic physics relevant to CT including safety (dosing) issues
--Image reconstruction
- Peds-Neurimaging
:
--Tuesday am pediatric neuroradiology at TCH, including neuro-conf at TCH
--Procedures take priority at University Hospital; we will try to schedule light on tues am. Goal is at least every other Tuesday am at TCH
- Neuropathology
--brain cuttings are very important for fellowship year
--develop general knowlege of brain tumor histology(at neuro- tumor board conf).
- Knowlege of Literature
-develop skills in critical reading of the neuroimaging literature
Should routinely read AJNR, selected use of other journals (Neurology, neurosurg, etc)
- Research
: After 1-2 months, should have a clinical research project in mind that can be accomplished by end of fellowship. Discuss with faculty.
- Lectures
: A fellowship provides an excellent opportunity for you to develop 2 good lectures in an area of interest , that you will be able to build upon after ferllowship.
