Advocacy

The Medical Student Advocacy Office provides the following services to assist students throughout their education:
Counseling: The Advocacy Office provides confidential counseling to students in a variety of areas, including academic, occupational, marital, legal and financial.

Special counseling sessions are also available to students who do not pass the Boards or for those who were not matched in a residency program on schedule.

A network of general advisors has been developed to assist students in acquiring information with regard to women's liaison groups, research mentors, emeritus faculty and specialty clubs.

Advocacy: The Advocacy Office provides support to students with regard to curriculum, tutoring, minority student cases, promotions and space allocation.  An opportunity is provided to each first-year student to meet with the Dean for Advocacy to discuss any issues of concern.
Representation: The Advocacy Office provides representation of students at the SOM Executive Committee, Faculty Senate, and Promotions Committee meetings, as well as other Medical School forums.
Special Programs:
a)  Honors and Research Committee. Support is provided by the Advocacy Office for the Honors and Research Committee.  This committee determines graduation with honors, reviews summer research papers, assigns awards for the Honors Convocation, and selects students to participate in summer research programs.

b)  Research Programs:

  • Summer: Each summer, twenty students participate with a mentor in an 8-12 week research training program for first-time researchers, which is sponsored by NIH.
  • Winter: In January approximately sixty-five students present their research projects at the campus-wide UCHSC Student Research Forum, which is coordinated through the Student Advocacy Office.  Students are provided assistance with mentor and research subject selection, and training is provided by Dr. Repine to assist students with writing and presenting their research abstracts.  For three consecutive years, this forum featured a Nobel Laureate keynote speaker, including Harold Varmus, Director of the NIH.  Cash awards totaling over $6,000 are awarded to selected participants.
Students who present their research at the Research Forum in January are encouraged to submit their research for presentation at the Western Student Medical Research Forum in February, which is part of an eight-state American Federation for Clinical Research Symposium in Carmel, California.  The Student Advocacy Office provides funding, advisory and logistical support for participation in this program.
  • Other: Resources and advisory support are available for various other research programs, such as CoStep and the Indian Health Services Rural Experience, as well as special summer programs, such as the Tucson International Health Program.  Students are also given referrals to other departments for possible research opportunities.
c) Student Evaluation Program. Third- and fourth-year students receive rotation evaluations through the Student Advocacy Office.

d) International Programs.

  • Medical Student International Program. The Student Advocacy Office offers assistance to students who wish to participate in rotations abroad.  Opportunities are available in nearly every country in the world.  Up to four months' of credit is given for participation in overseas rotations.  In addition to the overseas rotations that are available, UCHSC was one of three US medical schools chosen for a medical student/faculty exchange with La Universidad del Valle in Cali, Columbia, South America, which is funded by the Pew Charitable Trust.
  • International Health Forums. During the academic year, the Student Advocacy Office coordinates forums in which students who have completed overseas rotations present an overview of their experience.
Student Advocacy Office Library Resources:
  • Scholarship, essay, and award notices.
  • AMA-FREIDA computer system, which is an interactive residency system, is located in the LRC/Denison Library.
