The department has 16 programs in education, clinical units and research.

Faculty research includes addiction, behavioral genetics, behavioral immunology, biological psychiatry, neurosciences, schizophrenia, early human development, brain imaging, primate research, family therapy, anxiety and affective disorders, managed care, transcultural psychiatry, American Indian mental health research and public psychiatry.

Faculty involvement in teaching students includes patient interviewing, a pre-clinical course on behavioral science, a third-year clinical clerkship and senior electives. The clinical education programs take place in nine hospitals.
