The Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD) is a large clinical department consisting of 9 Divisions and Sections, 110 full-time faculty, 10 part-time faculty, 370 clinical faculty, and approximately 88 staff members.
The Department of Surgery gained international recognition when four University physicians pioneered open heart surgery in the 1950's. Today, physicians in the Department are nationally recognized for excellence in the areas of cancer surgery, pediatric and adult cardiac surgery, pulmonary tuberculosis surgery, burn treatment, urologic oncology, plastic/reconstructive/hand surgery, solid organ transplantation, vascular surgery, emergency medicine, toxicology, and trauma surgery.
The Department is fully committed to surgical residency training and has a fully approved general surgical training program with formal approved fellowship training programs in cardiothoracic surgery, urology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, pediatric surgery, and emergency medicine. Approximately 80 residents rotate annually through University Hospital, The Children's Hospital, Denver Veterans Administration Hospital, Denver Health Medical Center, and other affiliated hospitals.
The ultimate goal of the Department of Surgery is to offer the University of Colorado Denver a balanced academic program of patient care, teaching, and scientific investigation. The philosophy of the Department is that all of its full-time faculty should function effectively in all three of these areas.
