Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome
The Mystery Killer
ARDS is a serious disease of the lung which kills at least 60% of its victims. With a death rate of more than 100,000 people in the USA each year, ARDS is far more common than most people realize. There are more deaths from ARDS than from AIDS in this country.
Since ARDS was first described over 25 years ago, little progress has been made in reducing the mortality associated with this syndrome. A better understanding of the basic process responsible for ARDS is needed before effective treatments or preventions can be developed.
Webb-Waring Institute for Cancer, Aging, and Antioxidant Research is on the forefront of ARDS research. Led by Dr. John Repine, Director, the Webb-Waring research team consists of M.D. and Ph.D. researchers with multifaceted expertise in areas such as cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology.
