The Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences of the University of Colorado Denver School of Dental Medicine has for more than 20 years offered a monthly or weekly sterilization monitoring service for clinicians designed to access the effectiveness of office sterilizers.  Our service is offered to dentists, physicians, and anyone else using sterilization equipment in their office.  Clearly there is a requirement in this day and age to offer high standards of monitoring efficacy. 

We recommend weekly spore testing with biological spore strips which are used to verify that sterilization has taken place via evaluation of spore death.  Our laboratory notifies clients immediately with both a computer generated and hard copy generated test verification that sterilization has taken place.  Regular biological monitoring of your sterilizers will give you confidence and your patient’s piece of mind.

1) Are there legal requirements for sterilization procedures in your office? 
Many states require that dental and medical office sterilizers be monitored with biological indicators on a weekly basis, Colorado highly recommends this procedure.  The American Dental Association and Centers for Disease Control also recommend weekly monitoring.
