Public health is "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals." (1920, C.E.A. Winslow)
Dental Public Health is that form of dental practice that serves the community as a patient rather than the individual. Dental Public Health specialists must have broad knowledge and skills in public health administration, research methodology, the prevention and control of oral diseases, and the delivery and financing of oral health care. It is one of the nine American Dental Association recognized specialties.
The Dept of Public Health at the University of Colorado Denver School of Dental Medicine was established in 2008. Diane Brunson, RDH, MPH is the Director. The Department has a draft Strategic Plan that is guiding the priorities for the next several years.
