Externship in Hospital Dentistry

This elective is offered to junior/senior dental students with assignments running for a minimum of four and a maximum of six weeks. The program commences in May and runs through December.

PROGRAM GOALS
The goal of this elective is to give the participant an understanding and practice experiences in hospital dentistry. The extern will be integrated into a General Practice Resident curriculum, receiving instruction in hospital protocols and patient management. The extern will become familiar with the special needs of the medically compromised, psychologically impaired and developmentally disabled patient.
Externs assist residents who provide care to patients in each of the specialty areas, including oral surgery, myofacial pain, prosthodontics, endodontics and implant dentistry. They will be given the opportunity to observe and participate in complex dental procedures to obtain greater understanding of the interrelationships of oral diseases and systemic diseases, and to participate in the perioperative evaluation and management of patients.
Externs attend lectures, seminars, treatment-planning sessions, literature review sessions and round with the residents and attendings. The participant will have the opportunity to perform/ observe a variety of dental procedures in the outpatient, Emergency Room and Operating Room environment.
The knowledge and skills gained during this experience provide externs with a greater understanding and enhanced perspective of hospital dentistry.
