Combined BA/BS-MD Degree Program
The BA/BS-MD degree program is a partnership between University of Colorado Denver’s (UCD) College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Medicine. The purpose of the program is to assemble 8-10 outstanding students from broadly diverse backgrounds that are committed to serving the health care needs of Colorado. Being accepted into the program, and successfully completing the requirements, enables you to have a reserved seat in a top-ranked medical school while having the freedom to explore other interests during your exciting college years at UCD.
How it works
- BA/BS-MD combined degree program will take eight years to accomplish
- You will enroll in UC Denver for the bachelor’s degree of your choice – a list of all undergraduate programs is available at: http://ucdenver.edu/academics/degrees/Pages/UndergraduateDegrees.aspx.
- Students will be guided in applying for scholarships to help cover basic educational costs.
- You will complete the sequence of required premedical coursework while pursuing your bachelor’s degree.
- You will live with students who have similar academic interests in the Health Sciences Learning Community of Campus Village during your freshman and sophomore years.
- You will participate in the medical seminar series and summer program opportunities that will enrich your education and will enhance your knowledge regarding Colorado’s public health issues, important topics in cutting edge research, ethical issues and explore significant technological advances for learning, such as the use of simulators.
- Upon successful completion of your bachelor’s degree, all program requirements and the MCAT, students will enter the UC School of Medicine (SOM) to complete their M.D. degree.
Eligibility for the Combined BA/BS-MD Degree Program:
- A Colorado resident and U.S. citizen, or be in compliance with U.S. immigration laws.
- A current high school senior planning to begin college the fall semester after graduation.
- A high school GPA of 3.5, a CCHE index score of 110* or better before the December 15th application deadline.
- A commitment to a career in medicine.
*The CCHE index score is a combination of your high school GPA or class rank and your ACT or SAT scores. To calculate your CCHE index score see http://highered.colorado.gov/Academics/Admissions/IndexScore/
Both UCD and the SOM believe that it our responsibility to help meet the healthcare needs of the state by selecting talented students that intend to practice medicine in Colorado. The BA/BS-MD program Admissions Committee will consider all aspects of an applicant’s experiences, academic performance and background including:
- Excellence of academic record
- Array of community and/or volunteer service experiences
- Characteristics and capabilities that would make you an excellent physician
- Extracurricular activities
- Honors and Awards
- Full or part-time jobs held during school or in summers
How to apply:
- You’ll need to complete applications for both the UCD undergraduate program and the supplemental BA/BS-MD degree. Applications are due December 15, 2009.
- Three letters of recommendation (two from science and math teachers) and a third from a humanities teacher or a mentor from a community service or clinical experience.
- Complete a personal statement around specific topics
- A select group of students will be offered two interviews with members of the Admissions Committee in mid March 2010.
- Those candidates accepted to the program will be notified in early April 2010.
