Who are we?
The Colorado Rural Health Scholars Program (CoRHSP) is a non-profit residence-based science and medical program primarily designed for rural students interested in careers in the health sciences. Special consideration is given to minority and underprivileged students. CoRHSP is staffed, supported and directed by a group of eight dedicated medical students, University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine professors and staff.

What are we?
CoRHSP is an intensive academic program designed for students interested in the medical field (physician, nursing, physician's assistant, physical therapy, dentistry, pharmacy, etc). During the program, participants divide their time between instruction, group project work, laboratories, hospital volunteer positions, educational field trips, recreational field trips, and time spent with a mentor. The program is fairly structured, however there is free time scheduled during the week and on weekends. Nearly all activities are done as a group and we are planning a fun and educational summer experience!!
When is it?
CoRHSP extends from June 7 through June27, 2009, seven days a week. You must be free for the entire program duration in order to participate as a scholar or counselor. Students and staff remain at the Regis University campus on the weekends (when we are not out on field trips and adventures)! Please see this year's Scholar Application for dates.
Where is it?
Students and staff will be housed for the duration of the program in a dormitory at Regis University . Classes and laboratories will be held at the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora with clinical experience at nearby Denver hospitals. The camp will also be traveling to Grand Junction, CO for a four day period during week 2. We will be staying at dormitories at Mesa State and will be visiting St. Mary's Hospital during this time.

What will I gain from the program?
- A stimulating learning environment among talented rural high school students.
- An opportunity to explore and experience medical and health professionals at UC Denver.
- A rewarding, fun summer experience.
How will I spend my time?
During the program, participants will spend two days per week volunteering at local hospitals in challenging volunteer positions. Three days per week will be spent in class or the laboratory on topics such as anatomy, physiology, disease prevention, and public health. There will be excursions around Denver , as well as other recreational group activities during the week and on weekends. Evenings will include small discussion groups and guest speakers. In addition, you will be traveling to Grand Junction, CO for 4 days to experience health care in a rual setting.
Who should apply?
Rural high school students entering their junior or senior year are encouraged to apply if they have an interest in medicine or health care. Please be advised that you will have to demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence and provide letters of recommendation from teachers and members of your community.
All current first year medical students at UCD are eligible to apply for counselor positions. Positions filled by first-year medical students are the two co-directors and one student to coordinate each of the following: lectures, laboratories, volunteering and recreational activities. Two incoming first-year students will also be selected each year.

What is the selection process?
- Applications for the coming summer will be made available in January.
- Selected applicants will be interviewed by March.
- All final decisions will be made by April and scholars will be notified by mail.
