Overview
This portion of the Integrated Clinician’s Course has a theme of “Transition to Clerkships.” It is our goal to provide you with the fundamental skills, including presentation and procedural skills, for your clinical rotations. The ICC activities are designed to ease your transition into being an active member of the health care team in a variety of clinical settings.

The General Objectives of IDPT 7001 are:

  1. Demonstrate proper technique for phlebotomy and intravenous (IV) placement.
  2. Understand the components of an oral presentation that demonstrate the ability to abstract relevant clinical information, synthesize a differential diagnosis, formulate a management plan, and identify your own knowledge gaps for self-directed learning.
  3. Develop skills necessary to write notes and orders in patient charts in a variety of settings.
  4. Develop an approach to potentially difficult ethical situations
  5. Identify the components of medical professionalism
  6. Describe the basic legal obligations in providing patient care
  7. Develop an approach to interpreting chest x-rays
  8. Discuss the impact of medical errors on a medical student, a patient care team, and a patient.
  9. Explore our current health care system and understand the challenges of implementing a single-payer system.
  10. Understand the role of a third year medical student on a patient care team and the expectations of other team members.
Attendance and Remediation: Students who register for the course but plan to miss one or more sessions must contact the course director at least one month prior to the start of the course. Students must review the Absence Request Policy and complete an Absence Request Form (http://www.uchsc.edu/som/curriculum/icc/policy.html). This form must be emailed to both course directors and the course administrator. Remediation of missed content is required for all absences, voluntary and involuntary. Students who unexpectedly have to miss sessions should contact the course director as soon as possible to discuss the situation. Students will receive an IP until the remediation is satisfactorily completed. Remediation will be due two weeks after the completion of the course.

***** As this is a required course, random attendance will be taken during this course; anyone not present may be checked for attendance on subsequent days. All absences must be remediated.
