ICC 4 - IDPT 7004 : Phase 3

Small Group Activities And Cape Testing
CAPE CPE Testing (Gwyn Barley and CAPE staff): Clinical skills evaluation and testing. Scheduling will be done through the CAPE.

Career Development Sessions (Maureen Garrity and Lorraine Adams/Student Affairs): Advising and counseling concerning residency applications and fourth year graduation end issues. Topics to be covered include ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System) and NRMP (National Residency Match Program) registration and deadlines, MSPE (Medical Student’s Performance Evaluation/Dean’s Letter), personal statements, CV/ERAS content/format/personal statements and LORs (Letters of Reference).

Handoff Session (Eugene Chu and Clinical Faculty):
The overarching goal of this session is to provide students with an important new skill required for sub-interns- signing out patients and handing them off to colleagues for management overnight and when not in the hospital. The ability to adequately manage hand-offs is vital to the safety and care of patients in the hospital, regardless of which service you are on. This session will help students understand the importance of safe and effective communication of information between physicians when transferring patient care responsibilities. We will examine different modes of communication, systems outside of health care where handoffs are done effectively and give students an opportunity to practice structured written and verbal handoffs with prepared patient cases. The session is organized as follows:

  1. Small group discussion: 45 minutes
Topics include: appropriateness of various channels of communication, transfer of responsibility systems outside of healthcare and the importance of standardization of best practices for health care quality
  2. Practicing handoffs : One hour
Students will prepare a written handoff sheet based on prepared patient scenarios. They will then perform a structured, verbal handoff to a fellow student. Triage scenarios will be role played to assess adequacy of hand-offs and emphasize key components of the verbal and written sign-out. Students will have the opportunity to perform up to three handoffs each.
HANDOFF OBJECTIVES:
  • Understand the importance of efficient and effective communication in transferring patient care responsibilities.
  • Accurately and efficiently complete both written and verbal handoff processes.
  • Identify active patient issues for contingency planning, read backs and interactive questioning.
HANDOFF PREPARATION REQUIRED: Please read the following articles prior to your selective session. Come prepared to discuss these articles. Your active participation in this session is vital to its success.
  1. Patterson ES, Roth EM, Woods DD, Chow R, Gomes JO. Handoff strategies in settings with high consequences for failure: lessons for health care operations. Int J Qual Health Care 2004;16(2):125-32.
  2. Shojania KG, Fletcher KE, Saint S. Graduate medical education and patient safety: A busy – and occasionally hazardous - intersection. Ann Intern Med.2006;245:592-598
Interdisciplinary Oral Health Workshop (Mark Deutchman and School of Dentistry faculty and students):
Systemic health and oral health are closely related. More children and adults have a medical home than a dental home and oral health is a responsibility of both physicians and dentists. In the first hour of this session, we will discuss the relationship between oral and systemic health and study the appearance of a variety of intra-oral structures and lesions that physicians should be able to recognize. In the second hour, one dental student will be paired with two medical students who will practice performing the oral/head/neck exam on each other. At the end of this session, you will be able to recognize normal and abnormal intra-oral structures and conditions, be able to perform the oral/head/neck examination and have experienced inter-professional communication with dentists.”

ORAL HEALTH OBJECTIVES:
  • Describe the importance of oral health to systemic health
  • Recognize intra-oral diseases and lesions
  • Perform the oral/head/neck examination
  • Become familiar with dental clinical facilities
