Adult Ambulatory Care : Assessment

Assessment
What follows is a draft outline of what will likely be used to evaluate students in the ambulatory adult care course. A subcommittee of the clerkship block directors are continuing to work together to define a common template for evaluation including setting standards for a passing and an honors grade across clerkships.

Clinical Grade 60%
MCQ Exam 15%
Other 25%

(Participation in small group didactics, completion of assignments including power point presentation, chronic disease management project, preventive medicine project, and participation in hospice visit)
Other requirements for passing:

  • Completion of midpoint feedback form on student logs, student performance
  • Completion of all required competencies as determined by the student log; students unable to complete the competencies will be required to complete online cases that demonstrate the core diagnosis and management issues covered in the competencies
  • Completion of all project work
  • Attendance at all required curricular activities as stated in orientation
  • Passing performance on all required portions of the course

Clinical Grade:
Students will receive an evaluation form the preceptors they work with during the course. If they work with multiple preceptors at their primary preceptor site, this will be combined into one evaluation. The weighting of the clinical evaluations is as follows:

Primary preceptor 85%
Subspecialty clinic preceptor 15%

MCQ Exam:
This competency-based multiple choice examination will be administered at the end of the 8 week block. Students must receive a passing grade on this exam to pass the course.

Standardized Patient:
Students will have two standardized patient clinical encounters at the end of the 8 week block. Grading will be based on a checklist regarding the intended competencies to be achieved and a post-test. Students must receive a passing grade in order to pass the course.

Other:
Students will be evaluated be the facilitators on their participation in small group activities. A grading rubric will be developed to evaluate all project work, and this will be incorporated into the final grade.

Passing Grade:
A passing grade must be achieved on the clinical evaluation, written examination, standardized patient evaluation, small group didactics and project work in order to pass the course. In addition, students must attend and complete all required activities. Students who require remediation for any portion of the clerkship will receive an IF.
