University of Colorado Hospital
The Emergency Department (ED) at University of Colorado Hospital is a Level II trauma center with over 50,000 annual ED visits. Because of its status as a trauma center, a tertiary care referral center, and an inner-city hospital in a major metropolitan area, students will be exposed to a diverse patient population with a wide variety of medical conditions including minor acute illness, major medical conditions and trauma, both major and minor. Students will assess and manage patients as part of a team consisting of an attending physician, and a senior resident.

The Children’s Hospital
The ED at the Children’s Hospital is a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center with approximately 45000 annual ED visits. It is also a tertiary care referral center and an inner-city hospital in a major metropolitan area. Thus, students here will also be exposed to an assortment of medical conditions in a diverse patient population, as depicted above. Students will be expected to assess patients as the primary individual responsible for the care, and precept with an attending physician. Students will also function as part of a team with senior residents and/or fellows, in order to gain experience in the care of significantly ill or injured children.


Assuming 24 students per 8 week block, there will be 6 students per two week Emergency Care course. Three of these students will be assigned at each teaching site. Because of the brevity of the course, students will spend their entire two weeks at one teaching site. The competencies (as listed below) are broad and will be covered in each site, whether pediatric or adult care is being given.
