- Obtain and convey medical information with patients, their families and professional colleagues including but not limited to:
- Discuss advanced directives and DNAR orders with patients and families in the inpatient setting
- Deliver difficult news including information regarding diagnosis and prognosis in life-threatening conditions
- Listen actively
- Demonstrate collaborative decision making
- Gain skills in the effective use of medical translators
- Complete written notes and oral presentations, and call consultations
- Obtain a medical consultation from subspecialty colleagues; communicate effectively with consultants

Systems-Based Practice:
- Introduction to the cost of health care and cost-effective care
- Introduction to core quality measures within the hospital system
- Develop skills in team-based care, including an understanding of the skills and knowledge provided by consultants, nurses, PT, RT, OT, lab staff, discharge planners, etc.
- Understand how an illness episode occurs across different care settings
Practice-Based Improvement:
- Transitions in medical care and interdisciplinary approaches to care
- Performance assessment of core quality measures for one or more patients cared for during the rotation
- Education of housestaff and faculty on core quality measures in the inpatient setting
