Assessment:
Assessment is multi-faceted intending to ensure observation of students in the clinical setting, written exam for knowledge and comparison to national norms, small group discussions to help assess clinical reasoning, web-based cases for self-directed learning and self-assessment. A passing grade must be achieved on the clinical evaluation, NBME shelf exam, and standardized patient in order to pass the clerkship. In addition, students must participate in all required activities. An IF grade is assigned if any portion of the clerkship requires remediation. Students who are at risk for failing the clinical portion will receive specific mid-course feedback. We will monitor student logs for meeting required competencies at mid-point and completion of the course. Additionally, we are working with other block directors to employ a uniform clinical evaluation form appropriate for level of training and changing degree of experience throughout phase 3. We also hope to define a standard across clinical blocks for Honors/Pass/Fail grades.
Each of the following modalities will contribute to the overall assessment and grade for students enrolled in the block. Weight given to each of these areas has been modified in an attempt to best reflect the time that students commit to each area of study.
