  1. Perform a focused History & Physical Examination of the musculoskeletal system for patients presenting with acute trauma, musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, arthritis, and spinal disorders.

Acute Trauma

  1. Perform a focused H&P and interpret basic x-rays for patients with an acute injuries. (TR)

  2. Describe the mechanism of injury and epidemiology of:
    • Common fractures of the wrist, hip, tibia, ankle

Musculoskeletal pain: bursitis, tendonitis, myofascial pain

  1. Perform a focused H&P on patients presenting with discomfort of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee ankle, and/or foot. (TR)

Spine

  1. Perform a focused H&P on patients presenting with deformity or discomfort involving the spine. (TR)

  2. Explain the differential diagnosis and general treatment options for patients presenting with low back strain /sprain, fractures, herniated discs and spinal stenosis.

Rheumatology

  1. Describe the 3 most common causes and the diagnostic approach for patients presenting with acute monoarticular arthritis.

  2. Identify the history, physical exam, and radiographic findings characteristic of patients presenting with inflammatory polyarthritis; such as rheumatoid arthritis. (TR)

  3. Identify the history, physical exam, and radiographic findings that characterize non-inflammatory arthritis; such as osteoarthritis. (TR)

  4. Describe the appropriate use and interpretation of common rheumatologic lab tests; ESR,CRP, RF, ANA.

Basic Science

  2. Bone Growth / Fracture Healing - Explain the basic mechanisms bone growth & development and the relation to fracture healing.

  3. Osteoporosis / Metabolic Bone Disease - Describe the effects of aging on the skeleton, the evaluation of bone quality, and the methods of prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
