Integration
Our integrated Intrasession seminar with neurology will focus on teaching students the elements of competency and how neurological and psychiatric disease may or may not impact patients’ ability to make competent decisions. Competence is based on a person’s ability to make sound judgments and to make “reasonable” decisions and competence is task specific. Psychiatrists are asked to give opinions about competence and the presence of neurological and psychiatric disease often raises the question of competence. So, can a patient who has a psychotic illness give informed consent? Does a mild dementia make it impossible for a patient to consent to surgical interventions? This seminar will meet on the 5th Monday of the block for 2 hours and be jointly taught by psychiatry and neurology faculty.
Translational basic science + Intra-session: covered in CVRP, Neuroscience, and Metabolism. Augmented by student reading, APA practice guidelines, and medical student seminar during block.
