Rural & Community Care : Assessment

Assessment
Students provide their clinical faculty with a completed “Learning Contract’ at the start of the rotation. Using this tool and experience log data students are given a mid-course formative evaluation by their clinical faculty. Clinical faculty will address the student’s progress toward personal goals from the Learning Contract and assess how “on track” the student is in completing their assignments’. In addition, after reviewing log data the student and their clinical faculty will formulate a plan to ensure that they either see all the required core problems and symptoms & signs are seen by the end of the 4 weeks or direct the student to online or written case materials.

The clerkship will use a number of strategies to produce a summative assessment of each student. Some of these will be jointly conducted with the Adult Ambulatory Care Block. For instance, at the conclusion of both the RCC and the AAC clerkships students will complete a graded PowerPoint presentation about a unique aspect of their practice site that addresses CVD services and community resources. This will allow students in rural sites to compare and contrast their experience with the students who have done their AAC clerkship in urban and suburban settings. A joint Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) exam and SP exam with a written post-test at the conclusion of the 8-week block will form a portion of both clerkships’ final grade. One SP case will be a 46 year old woman with cough who wishes help with smoking cessation and has a second underlying problem of inadequately treated depression. The second case is an elderly Russian gentleman with hypertension, medication compliance issues and significant cardiac risk. A Rural and Community Care clinical evaluation will be completed by the clinical faculty instructor. Finally, Rural and Community Care projects and assignments will be graded to arrive at a grade for the clerkship. (online participation, conducting a CVD risk assessment on 5 patients, using a depression screening tool on one patient, using another CDM tool on one patient and participating in weekly online discussion.
