Information as of June, 2007
Beginning the week of June 18th, you will be part of an exciting and historic event for the University of Colorado. The University Hospital [Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion (AIP)] will move their entire clinical operations from 9th Avenue to the Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC). They will be the first of three major teaching hospitals to relocate to the site with The Children’s Hospital’s (TCH) move planned for the first of October this year and the VA’s move planned once new construction is completed. Very few faculty or students ever get a chance to be part of such an important and complex event. During these relocation transitions there will be maximum attention focused on patient safety as patients are relocated and new units and equipment come on line. It will be a stressful time for many. Like faculty, we anticipate that you will be asked to be flexible and participate in these events in any reasonable way you may be directed. Your course director will be providing details about how your rotation will work during this time. Though not specifically spelled out in our curriculum it will be a wonderful chance to watch how healthcare systems need to be well coordinated.
We also want to convey important student information to you related to student activities during the summer months at the AMC. Information and polices are evolving and we will do our best to keep you updated on changes. Further information will be forthcoming in August and as the TCH move gets closer.
STUDENT RESOURCES:
- You will have access to the first and second floors 24/7 in the RC-1 (see map at URL: http://www.uchsc.edu/facilities/parking/docs/FitzMap.pdf). This building contains small group rooms for studying, lecture halls, and a computer room. You may also use this as a path to reciprocal permit student parking in the Aspen and Breckenridge lots.
- Office hours for the Dean of Students and Dean of Clinical Curriculum will also be forthcoming in building 500. The location is currently being prepared.
- If you have student concerns related to AMC please contact Student Affairs. We are doing our best to address student concerns as this process moves forward and appreciate your feedback. However, for course specific concerns you should still contact your course director.
AMC AND HOSPITAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Your UCHSC badge will be required to access any health science center building (RC-1 for now and in the future the educational buildings) and to open the parking gates beginning on July 1. You must have your badge with you on campus at all times.
- Clinical sites (AIP, TCH, etc) will require different and NEW hospital badges, which you should be making arrangement to obtain or discussing with the course directors/coordinators. Your clinical badges will also control your access to scrubs. We do not control how the hospitals decide to give you access to different clinical sites or scrubs but we are advocating to make this as student friendly as possible.
- You must have completed your fingerprinting, HIPPA, immunization verification at the VA, which we then share with other hospitals. Most of you have done this but if you have not done so please do this ASAP!
TRANSPORTATION:
Please plan your transportation needs in advanced for your clinical rotation taking into consideration the times you will arrive and leave your clinical site. This may govern how you choose to travel during those rotations.
PARKING:
- Students who have purchased parking will be allowed to park in the Aspen and Breckenridge lots (see map at URL: http://www.uchsc.edu/facilities/parking/docs/FitzMap.pdf). If you wish to purchase a half month parking pass for June please contact the parking office.
- If you have currently purchased parking, you will be able to park in these lots until July 1st. After July 1st you will need to purchase another 3 months of parking from the parking office. The new rate as of July 1st will be $36.00 per month.
- Please display your permit on your dash to make it visible.
- As of July 1st your UCHSC badge will be required for access through the parking gates.
- We DO NOT recommend that you park on the neighborhood streets around the campus for security reasons.
- Further parking information can be found: Parking URL http://www.uchsc.edu/facilities/parking/
RTD:
- RTD does have pick up sites on the AMC/Fitzsimons campus. Please check schedules and rates to plan for your rotations at AMC and consider the times you will be arriving and leaving the campus. RTD URLs: http://www.rtd-denver.com/ and http://www.uchsc.edu/facilities/parking/docs/RTD-Rates.pdf
- If you want to download RTD Schedule to PALM http://www.secondkiss.com/rtd/, you can also call the RTD office to see when a bus is coming Monday through Friday 6am-8pm and Weekends and Holidays from 9am-6pm; 303-299-6000; 1-800-366-7433
- Bus Lines to AMC/Fitzsimons
- 15 - East Colfax (East-West route)
- 15L - East Colfax Limited (East-West route) Note: Limited buses only stop at selected bus stops along a Local route to provide faster service. In some cases, they take shortcuts that bypass congested areas
- 20 - 20th Avenue (East-West route)
- 121 - Peoria Cross-town (North-South route)
- DM - Boulder/Fitzsimons - Regional route
SHUTTLE:
- The shuttle service will run from 6:20 AM to 6:20 PM every 20 minutes as it is currently doing until October 1st. After this date, decreased service is anticipated though some type of shuttle support will continue to run into 2008. Riding the shuttle is first come first serve.
- See Shuttle URL for further information: http://www.uchsc.edu/facilities/parking/docs/ShuttleSchedule.pdf
BIKE:
- There are bike racks around the major health science center buildings. A bike cage will be placed in the parking structure planned to open 9/2007.
- See URL for Biking, walking and carpooling: http://www.fitzsimonstma.com/
- There are a few on-street bike routes and off-street paths that feed the AMC/Fitzsimons campus. However, it's likely that you'll need to fashion your own route to get to work. Don't be deterred, however, as you don't need a street to be a designated route to ride on it!
- 17th Ave. - Signalized intersection at Peoria.
- Montview Blvd. - Signalized intersection at Peoria. Montview does have bicycle lanes on it in Denver (bike lanes start at Yosemite).
- Quentin St. is the only signalized intersection that provides a signalized intersection for north-south routes directly into AMC.
- 13th Avenue is a signed bike route in Aurora.
- Moline Street is also a signed bike route in Aurora.
- Sand Creek Greenway - provides access into the campus for neighborhoods to the north, as well as access to the greater Metro area
SECURITY:
- Police officers can be called to escort you to your car or across campus 24/7. After-Hours Escort - Anschutz 303-724-4444. Please program this number into your cell phone to have quick access should you need it.
- There are lighted “blue” call stations with speaker phone access directly to UCHSC police throughout the campus and in the parking lots. Please report any suspicious behavior.
- Please always use common sense and caution when traveling on or off campus.
- Always look around and make eye contact with people. A bad guy (or gal) prefers someone who is not paying much attention to them. They are hoping you cannot identify them if they are ever stopped by the police.
- Be observant of the traffic control devices: Pedestrian Cross walks, Stop Signs and Speed Limit Signs. Take special note of construction area reduced speed limit signs. ATTENTION: The police officers WILL enforce these laws for the safety of the people on campus. (Violation of the traffic laws results in a summons issued to appear in either the Aurora Municipal or Adams County court system.)
- The police and security officers employed by the University of Colorado Denver and Health Sciences Center wear uniforms and have shoulder patches identifying this. The police officers wear a dark navy blue uniform, and the security guards wear a French (light) blue uniform. The security guards are not armed. They both carry radios and have direct communication with the police department’s communications center, a 24/7 operation. Officers patrol via marked police vehicle, foot and bicycle. The guards patrol via foot and marked security vehicle.
- The security guards at the University of Colorado Hospital are not employed by the University of Colorado Denver and Health Sciences Center. They are contracted by the hospital, and do not have direct communication with the University of Colorado Police Department. Some of the blue phones near the hospital go to the security company for the hospital, not the police department.
Both the Office of Student Affairs (303-315-7678) and the Curriculum Office (303-315-0204) want to optimize your experiences at the new AMC/Fitzsimons Campus.
