Women's Health Care: Major Teaching Sites

Women Care
The Women Care portion of the course provides clinical experiences both inpatient and outpatient, serving patients ranging in age from adolescence to the end of life. The Newborn Care portion of the course is an inpatient experience. Although the number of patients seen and diagnoses will vary from site to site, all students have the same opportunities to achieve the basic competencies and there will be equivalent methods of evaluation among all of the sites. In order to ensure that experiences meet competency requirements, additional formats for learning are provided (see below). Beginning with the academic year 2007-2008, the Women and Newborn Block will consist of 6 weeks. Students will spend five and a half of these weeks focusing on “women care” and approximately a half week focusing on newborn care.

The identified teaching sites for the clerkship will remain the same as the current clerkship. All teaching sites have received good-excellent evaluations by students and are reviewed annually or more frequently for quality. We plan on continuing to try to recruit additional AHEC sites. Current clinical sites for the Women Care portion of the course include:

  • University Hospital
Approximately 38% of students have spent 6 weeks at UH in inpatient and ambulatory settings. Primary teachers include full time faculty, clinical faculty and residents.
  • Denver Health
35% of students have spent 6 weeks in the DH system for inpatient and outpatient care.
Primary teachers include full time faculty, clinical faculty and residents.
  • Exempla St Josephs Hospital
10% (16 students per year) have spent 6 weeks based at Exempla St. Josephs for inpatient and outpatient care.
    Primary teachers are clinical faculty.
  • Aurora Medical Center
5% of students have spent 6 weeks at Aurora Medical Center for inpatient and outpatient care.
    Primary teachers are clinical faculty.
  • Rural/AHEC sites
12% of students have spent 6 weeks in rural sites for inpatient and outpatient care.
Primary teachers are clinical faculty. Sites used within the past year include: Durango, Vail, Frisco, Alamosa, Colorado Springs, and Greeley.

Newborn Care:
The clinical sites for the Newborn Care portion of the course will include University Hospital, Denver Health and the AHEC sites. The students assigned to Exempla St. Joseph Hospital will come to University Hospital for the Newborn Care clinical experience. The students will spend 4 mornings (8 am until noon) and 1 evening over the course of one week. The instructors will include pediatric attendings, housestaff, and nurses.
