Women Care
In order to meet the needs of the newly defined competencies and attempt to attain consistency among the various clinical sites, we plan on developing and integrating new learning formats. Our curriculum will include:
- Clinical experiences in hospital and ambulatory settings (as described above)
- GTA session: Students have the opportunity to learn and practice physical exam and communication skills centered around the pelvic and breast examination. An initial GTA session will be scheduled during the Life Cycles Block. We will implement a ‘refresher session’ during the Women and Newborn block, especially for students who have this block scheduled during the second half of the year.
- Suture workshop: This two hour session is scheduled during the afternoon of the orientation day. Students will receive didactic and hands on instruction in knot tying and suturing.
- Student manual and block website: This is provided to all students during the orientation session for the clerkship/block. These written materials include all curriculum competencies, lecture notes, self-study guides, charts, books and website references, as well as information about logistics for the clerkship, grading and professionalism policies, and guides for considering a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology. All information in our manual will be available on the course website.
- Textbook: The textbook Obstetrics and Gynecology, 5th edition(2004) edited by Charles Beckman, Frank Ling, and Douglas Laube is the recommended course textbook. This textbook covers all of the course competencies.
- Lecture/Case discussion series: Currently conducted one-half day per week. All students are required to attend unless on rotations >50 miles from Denver. Content for these sessions is defined by the core competencies. All sessions are taught or facilitated by full-time faculty and fellows.
- Web-based cases: We will utilize the uWISE web-based questions and cases developed by APGO (Association of Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics) that cover our competencies. We will require that students who are not exposed to a required competency/objective through a clinical experience complete the web-based questions/cases pertinent to the required competency/objective.
- Small group case discussions: There are two required small group case discussions involving an unintended pregnancy case and an abnormal uterine bleeding case. All preceptors and students will receive the same instructions and materials for these cases. Preceptors will receive learning objectives for these cases.
Newborn Care
The curriculum will include informal bedside teaching and use of other written and possibly web-based instructional materials. A live video case will be updated and made available to all students. Students will be required to present a patient to an attending or senior resident and demonstrate the physical exam. They will receive direct feedback from the attending/senior resident.
