Assessment
Assessment is multi-faceted intending to ensure observation of students in the clinical setting, document types of patient encounters and experiences, and guide faculty on more objective evaluations. Each of the following modalities will contribute to the overall assessment and grade for students enrolled in the block.
- Patient logs and direct observation: Students will record clinical encounters and patient diagnoses, utilizing a list of required areas for clinical patient evaluation defined by the Competency Table. The faculty and residents who work directly with the students will be asked to complete a clinical evaluation and assign a clinical grade. The clinical grade will account for 75% of the overall grade.
- NBME Shelf exam: This provides objective assessment and allows us to compare our students’ performance to other students nationally. We plan on reviewing the exam to evaluate to what extend our newly defined competencies are covered. The shelf examination counts for 20% of the overall grade. Students are required to pass the shelf exam in order to pass the clerkship.
- Standardized Patients (SP): We will implement a clinical skills evaluation utilizing a standardized patient at the end of the block. This case will assess history taking and physical exam skills and the ability to generate a differential diagnosis using history, physical exam and laboratory data. Students will be graded on a pass fail basis. Students will be required to pass this evaluation. Students who initially fail this evaluation will be given feedback and the opportunity to repeat the same case a second time.
- History and Physical exam write ups: Students are required to complete two H and Ps over the course of the 6 week block. One write up will focus on an obstetric patient and one will focus on a gynecology patient. The students are required to do a literature search and provide recent evidence-based information from at least two references in the discussion section of the H and P. The H and Ps count for 5% of the grade.
Mid-Clerkship Evaluation: All students will receive a “mid-clerkship” evaluation. During this session students will meet individually with a faculty member/preceptor. Student will receive direct feedback and their logs will be reviewed. The feedback from this session will be documented on a formal evaluation sheet which is signed by the student and the attending.
We will utilize the evaluation form and comply with the standards that have been approved for all of the clinical clerkships. Each of the following modalities will contribute to the overall assessment and grade for students enrolled in the block.
Clinical evaluations: 75%
NBME Shelf exam: 20%
Standardized Patient: Pass/Fail
H and Ps 5%
A student will be assigned an IF grade if he/she receives a failing grade on the clinical evaluation and/or the shelf exam.
Newborn Care Evaluation: This grade will be assigned by the attending/preceptor. The grading system will be Pass/Fail.
