Scheduling and Relationship of courses within block:
The block will be divided such that EC will always have one quarter of the total students enrolled in the block. For example, if each block enrolls 24 students, EC will have 6 students and WHC will have 18 students at any given time. This will require the WHC course to be completed either in 6 consecutive weeks or divided into 4 weeks and 2 weeks. (Please refer to the table below for specific block schedule options.) It is anticipated that Michael Baca in Obstetrics and Gynecology will initiate scheduling and placement of students for the WHC course. Marybeth Hutchins will then assign students for placement in the EC sites.

The students will have 2 days during this block when they are all together and participate in combined block activities—orientation and assessment days.
Orientation will take place on the first day of the block for all students. WHC will begin with a half day GTA session for all students during which time pelvic and breast exam skills will be taught. During the afternoon the students will have a Suture Workshop and an orientation for the Women's Health Care Course and the Emergency Care Course. This will include a review of the course objectives and a discussion of the block structure and schedule so that students will be oriented to the integration with EC.
The final day of the block will be a full day of assessment. Students will take the NBME shelf exam for Obstetrics and Gynecology in the afternoon. The morning will consist of two standardized patients. One SP exam will incorporate objectives for Women's Health Care and one will focus on Emergency Care material. The SP exam will be discussed in greater detail in the later section on Assessment. The students who complete the Women's Health Care course in the first 6 weeks of the block will take the NBME shelf exam for Obstetrics and Gynecology the morning of the last day of the course. They will take the SP exam at the end of the block. Students will take a written exam that covers EC material at the end of each 2 week block.
Emergency Medicine Course Call:
Students will work rotating shifts which include days, evenings, weekends and overnights. All students will be off the final Saturday and Sunday of the two weeks.
