The Educational Development and Research (ED&R) Office was newly established in 2004. The Office provides educational consultation to the School of Medicine on curriculum design, student assessment, course, faculty teaching, and program evaluation, faculty development, and instructional technology. In addition to the Associate Dean/Director, ED&R includes two education faculty and four full-time staff. These staff and faculty members play a central role in the evaluation and continuous quality improvement of the medical student curriculum by (1) providing curriculum development, evaluation and assessment expertise, (2) assisting faculty, residents, and students to develop and enhance their teaching skills, (3) designing and developing the use of educational technology for teaching and learning, (4) providing laptop and PDA support for students, (5) collaborating with faculty members to conduct medical education research that provides a better conceptualization of the processes and outcomes of medical education, (6) managing the collection, analysis, and reporting of student evaluations of courses and faculty members, (7) conducting program evaluation for continuous quality improvement, and (8) providing expertise on the development and implementation of problem-based learning (PBL) and other innovative case-based learning methods, along with the training of faculty tutors to facilitate PBL small groups.
Mission Statement
The mission of the ED&R Office is to provide expertise to the School of Medicine in the areas of curriculum development, evaluation, educational technology, and educational research methods and design through the support of individual faculty members, courses, committees, and school-wide faculty development efforts. We value and practice the principles of professionalism in providing service to the students, staff, and faculty of the CU School of Medicine. Our goal is to provide the expertise and support for the confidential collection, analysis, and reporting of accurate and valid educational data to our customers – the CU School of Medicine community of students, staff, and faculty.

Evaluation
- Coordinate and staff the evaluation of courses and teaching for feedback to individual faculty members, departments, course chairs, and the Curriculum Oversight Committee.
- Develop and conduct program evaluation
Educational Technology
- Provide technical support for the setup, maintenance, and repair of laptops and PDAs for medical students.
- Assist faculty in identifying appropriate technologies for instruction.
- Collaborate with faculty members in the design/development and acquisition of computer-based software and World Wide Web applications for all Phases of the curriculum.
- Coordinate the planning and acquisition of computer and multimedia technology in support of education.
- Provide technical support in the delivery of e-curriculum activities.
Problem-based Learning (PBL)
- Collaborate in the development and writing of PBL cases.
- Recruit and train tutors to teach PBL small groups.
- Implement and coordinate the PBL curriculum, including evidence-based medicine applications.
Faculty Development
- Assist faculty members, fellows, residents, and students in enhancing and developing skills as teachers and educational leaders.
- Focus attention on the importance of excellence in teaching within the mission of the CU School of Medicine.
Medical Education Research
- Provide consultation on educational research design and methods.
- Conduct research in collaboration with faculty that will contribute to an improved understanding of the process and outcomes of medical education.
- Collaborate on the development of educational research/evaluation grants.
