Diversity Travel Awards
Ten Diversity Travel Awards of $500 funded by an NIH Meeting Grant to the University of Colorado
MST Program will be awarded to underrepresented minorities, first generation college students, or students from rural backgrounds who are presenting research at the National MD/PhD Student
Conference. Underrepresented minorities include African American, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Southeast Asian, or Pacific Islander.
Recipients of the 10 Travel Awards will be chosen on a competitive basis by a review committee. The criterion for selection will be the submitted abstract describing the student’s recent scientific work. Incoming and 1st year MD/PhD students may present research work completed as undergraduates or technicians, whereas more senior MD/PhD students should submit work based on a laboratory rotation or thesis project.
If the chosen awardee has already registered for the meeting, a reimbursement check in the amount of $500 will be processed

student and we will defray the registration fee. A check for the remaining amount will then be processed to reimburse travel and/or hotel expenses.

The Melvin Denis Memorial Travel Award
Melvin Denis was an MD/PhD student at the University of Utah who regularly attended the National MD/PhD S

tudent Conference.
He was a vivacious, outgoing, hardworking student who made a memorable impact on those around him. Melvin was awarded a
Diversity Travel Award to attend the 2004 conference and as always made a valuable contribution to the conference. We lost Melvin
on December 12th 2004 to an avalanche in the backcountry of Utah, which he loved to frequent. In his honor we have established this
special diversity travel award in his name. This award will recognize a student who represents some of the qualities important to Melvin,
such as a dedicated passion for science and a commitment to diversity in the sciences. The student selected for this award will be chosen
from those applying for the diversity travel awards. The recipient of this award will be chosen to share their work in an oral presentation
and recognized at the conference.
