We surveyed students, faculty, staff, alumni and others on what people look for currently and on the new SOM web site. These results will be used in combination with peer research and best practices to help guide the direction and purpose of the redesigned SOM homepage.
Web Site Redesign
As the downtown campus and the Health Sciences Center complete our merger into the University of Colorado Denver, all of our web sites will be redesigned to give a more common look and feel. There will be common elements (masthead) on the web sites that should give a unified look and feel wherever a person may browse on a UC Denver web site. Important to note is that though there may be a common look to UC Denver web sites, this will not affect content. Schools, departments, centers and individuals will control the content of their web sites.
School of Medicine Web Site Redesign
As we look at the School of Medicine (SOM) redesign, we are planning to incorporate the UC Denver look and feel while adding our own SOM branding to the SOM web sites. UC Denver will be providing the basic templates which will be modify for the SOM.
Content Management System
UC Denver uses a content management system called Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) on campus as part of the redesign process. MOSS is entirely web based and allows non technical staff and faculty to easy update their campus web sites. There is MOSS training on campus available to all SOM departments and personnel responsible for web design and updates.
URL Management and Guidelines
As we move forward, all SOM web sites will incorporate the ucdenver.edu URL address, e.g. www.uchsc.edu/som will become http://medschool.ucdenver.edu. All URL requests go through University Web Services and must meet campus URL requirements. Additionally the requested URL(s) need to meet the SOM URL guidelines.
WHERE DO I START?
1. Form a web site redesign committee.
2. If you wish to have a SharePoint collaboration site for the commitee contact Tyler Schultz of the Dean's Office.
3. Review and complete the Web Services redesign documents - also available via the SharePoint site (see #2.).
4. Request a UC Denver URL based on campus and SOM requirements.
5.
When ready to build your site go to MOSS training.
6.
Request your MOSS site be built on UCDenver.edu.
7. Sign in to
your MOSS site (see #6.) and begin creating your web pages for your site using MOSS templates.
When your department, division or program is ready to (re)design your website you will want to contact Tyler Schultz of the Dean's Office. He will be able setup a personalized and secure, intranet collaboration SharePoint site to assist in the redesign process.
The SharePoint site provides all Web Services required redesign documents (3 Phases) - Research, Stategy and Development. The documents guide you through the redesign process and provide logical steps and documentation to support your redesign decisions. Additionally you can share your redesign documents on the site via file upload/download. The SharePoint site is restricted to your specified redesign members and requires a campus username and password for all site members.
After you have completed the 3 phases of the redesign should take the campus MOSS training. It is recommended you take the training close to the time frame you actual begin the website creation. When ready to begin building you will need to request a medschool.ucdenver.edu MOSS site from Web Services.
For the actual website itself,
Web Services will be providing SOM branded, MOSS templates in January 2010. These templates should allow you to easily create welcome, section and content pages. Until the SOM templates become available you can use the UC Denver templates if necessary. However we recommend waiting for SOM templates so that you only need to migrate your site one time.
