Using the Web Safely
The internet is a wonderful tool for research, for shopping and for recreation, but like any public "place" it has its hazards. When you use the net you should be aware of a few quick and easy tips to help you protect your computer and your privacy.
Don'ts
download software to your computer unless you are getting it from a trusted source. If you are not sure about a source, contact us, we can help you find out more.
give out your email address on web discussion boards or in chat rooms. If you must have an email address to participate- set up a private email account for that purpose only on a free service such as hotmail. <www.hotmail.com>
email your password (or user ID) to anyone even if the request appears to be from a person you know.
ever provide your social security number on the web. (If a website asks for it, leave that site and never go back.)
use public computers (in libraries or coffee shops for example) to make credit card purchases. If you find something you want to buy while browsing on a public computer, take the information and call the company to order it.
Do
make sure that you have current virus software on your computer. (The IT group can loan you a CD to install the current version of McAfee if you need it)
close your browser and log off when you leave a computer (especially in public areas). If you can, it is even better to turn off the computer when you leave it.
look for a little padlock symbol in the bottom bar of your browser window when you fill out a web based form. That symbol tells you that you are using a secured web site and that your information will be encrypted.
use common sense on the net. Be cautious about the information you give out and the people you give it to.
