Wireless Computing

Since more and more faculty and staff are using the new wireless technology when they are off-campus, the SOP Information Technology Group would like to offer a few tips:

            1.      You must be in range of a wireless airport (network hub) in order to receive a signal (usually 150 feet).

2.      Not all wireless connections will allow you to access all UCD services.

3.      Wireless and Virtual Private Network (VPN) are like oil & water – they do not mix.

4.      Although the banner hanging on the wall says “Free Wireless Access”, don’t believe it.

Here is a typical disclaimer and the process to access the wireless network at Denver International Airport:

The ability to access and browse www.attwireless.com or any other public site accessible free of charge from the GoPort storefront for high speed wireless Internet access is provided to you "as is" by AT&T Wireless ("AWS" or "us" or "we"). From time to time, AWS also may issue a limited number of free coupons (one per person) to access the entire Internet for a 24-hour period via a specific location.

Setup process at the Denver Airport:

1.      Start with the computer off and the wireless card installed. Turn the computer on and launch the browser (e.g., Netscape or Explorer).

2.      The AT&T Wireless GoPort Service Welcome Page will be displayed, allowing you to search for flights, but not much else without completing step 3.

3.     If you want to check email or surf the internet,   Registration for a GoPort Account will be required and a signup screen will be presented.

ADDITIONAL SETUP INFORMATION:

a.) An SSID (service set identifier) is referred to as a network name because essentially it is a name that identifies a wireless network
b.) Make sure that a new profile has been created and the SSID has been set to: "AT&T Wireless" (case sensitive).
c.) If the wireless profile has been created, it will be identified when the signal has been detected by your wireless card.
