Password Protect Your PDA
PDAs are becoming more and more popular. We store such things as passwords, account information, addresses, and other sensitive information. What happens if you accidentally leave your PDA somewhere or if it is stolen? Someone will have access to all of your personal information, and we know what can happen with that in today’s society. Did you know you can password protect your PDA? If the unthinkable should happen, whoever ends up with your handheld won’t be able to get to any sensitive information. The only way they can utilize the PDA is to reset it (erasing all of the data) and using it as is. Below are general instructions for setting up a password on your PDA.
The steps may differ slightly depending on what version of OS you have installed on your handheld. If you do not have one of the PDAs listed, please call and we will help you.
Setting up a Password on a Windows CE Handheld (HP iPAQ, Dell Axim):
Tap on Start and select Settings. Tap on Password. Check the box “Prompt if device unused for” and then select from 0 minutes to 24 hours for the device to sit unused before instigating a password.
Select the password type. Here you can choose whether you want a simple 4 digit password of anything or a strong alphanumeric password. Once you have this selected, type in your password.
You can set a hint from the Hint tab on the page. This will be visible by anyone who has your PDA, so be sure not to make your hint too obvious.
Setting up a Password on a Palm Handheld (Palm Tungsten, Treo, M series):
Tap on the “home” page of your PDA. Find the icon called Prefs and tap it to open it up.** Select Security under the General section. Tap under Passwords: to open up the panel to set a password. You can set up your hint on this screen as well. Tap OK.
**(On some versions, there are both a Prefs icon and a Security icon. Select the Security icon here).
Select, under Current Privacy, whether you wish to be able to see Private Records or that they are masked or hidden. Once you select one of these items, you will have to input your password to view private records. (To find out more about masked or hidden files on a Palm, select the Help button on the security preferences screen.)
Auto Lock Handheld is for purposely locking your handheld at that moment so that no one can access it. You have to use your password to unlock it again. You can also select the button at the bottom of the screen called Lock & Turn Off, to enable it to shut off your PDA and lock it.
