Philosophy:
Dr. Saseen embraces clinical pharmacy as the foundation of our profession, and identifies this as the key to a fulfilling career in pharmacy practice both in modern day practice and in the future. His personal teaching philosophy is to focus on "need to know” information that is needed for pharmacists to provide patient care, with emphasis on understanding/applying concepts, critical evaluation, and assimilating information in an accurate, succinct, and clinically relevant manner. Dr. Saseen takes the approach of "educating" pharmacy students rather than "teaching" or "instructing" students to instill a sense of ownership of knowledge, skills and attitudes with his trainees. He teaches with compassion and strives to be a positive role model.

Teaching Activities:
Dr. Saseen teaches components of the pharmacotherapy curriculum to P2 and P3 students at the School of Pharmacy: preventive cardiology (PHRD 4700 - IOS 3&4), rheumatolology (PHRD 4750 - IOS 6), cardiovascular complications of diabetes (PHRD 5700 - IOS 9), comprehensive patient care (PHRD 5650), and professional skills (PHRD 4100) classes. He precepts post-graduate year 1 (PGY1) and PGY2 pharmacy residents in family medicine. Dr. Saseen is director of the PGY-2 Ambulatory Care/Family Medicine pharmacy residency (ASHP-accredited, see: http://www.uchsc.edu/sop/clinicalpharm/1.Residencies/5.Ambulatory_Care-Family_Medicine_Residency_(PGY2).html.

Clinical Activities:
Dr. Saseen is a clinical pharmacy specialist at the University of Colorado A.F. Williams Family Medicine Center. This site is the clinical teaching site for the Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of Colorado Hospital. Clinical pharmacy services include: providing education for medical residents and other health care providers; performing medication reviews for patients; providing pharmacotherapy consultations that include pharmacotherapy recommendations and patient education; and evaluating prescribing. Specific areas of expertise include cardiovascular risk reduction pharmacotherapy (hypertension, dyslipidemia, antiplatelet therapy), rheumatology (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis), and type 2 diabetes.

Scholarly Activities:
Dr. Saseen participates in research related to pharmacotherapy (hypertension, dyslipidemia, rheumatoid arthritis). He has also published pharmacotherapy review articles and textbook chapters related to these and other contemporary pharmacotherapy and professional topics.

Professional Service:
Dr. Saseen is chair of the curriculum committee at the School of Pharmacy. He is on the Board of Directors of the Southwest Lipid Association ( regional chapter of the National Lipid Association). His professional efforts are focused on national recognition of pharmacists as health care providers, post-graduate pharmacy residency training, and specialty board certification of pharmacists.
