Information for Preceptors
The work performed by preceptors in supervising and training pharmacy students is valued by the school. Accreditation standards require students to complete substantial amounts of experiential training and it is recognized that the school would not meet accreditation standards without the support of the practice community in providing practice sites and preceptors.
Any pharmacist interested in becoming a preceptor is welcome to contact our office at any time.
Before a student begins a rotation, we need the following from you:
- A rotation syllabus, i.e. your plan for the rotation: Please use the appropriate template from the Preceptor Manual and revise to make it specific to your site and learning experience
- A current copy of your curriculum vitae (CV) or resume
- Assistance to obtain an affiliation agreement with your practice site: Please provide the name of the contact person who will facilitate this process
- Specific dates when the student will start and stop working with you
Preceptors are expected to:
- Develop a plan for the rotation (i.e., what activities are required, what the student will learn, special readings or assignments, and so on.). We call this plan a “Rotation Syllabus.” The NTPD program provides various syllabus templates (inside the Preceptor Manual that preceptors can use to start this plan for the most commonly offered rotation types. Discuss with the student and provide a copy to the Experiential Program Coordinator BEFORE the student starts onto the rotation.
- Establish a tool for assessing student performance based on the CAPE Outcomes and provide a copy of the tool to the student during the first week. This assessment will become the student’s final assessment form used in grading. The NTPD program provides assessment templates (inside the Preceptor Manual) that preceptors can use to develop this assessment tool.
- Complete the Week 1 Assessment form after the student has completed approximately 40 hours of the rotation. Discuss with student and provide copy to our office.
- Complete the Mid-Point Assessment form after the student has completed approximately 100 hours of the rotation. Discuss with student and provide copy to our office.
- Follow procedures described in the Preceptor Manual if a student's performance does not meet or exceed expectations at any time during the rotation.
- Select and complete the Final Assessment form (specific to each type of rotation, located in the Preceptor Manual) after the student has completed the full 200 hours required for the rotation. Please provide a copy to our office as soon as possible.
