Bio
Dr. Campbell holds the academic rank of Professor of Surgery at the University of Colorado. He served as Interim Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Children’s Hospital from 2001-2002. He is the Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center and is the Medical Director of the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at The Children’s Hospital. He received his medical degree from Rush Medical College. He then completed residencies in general surgery and thoracic surgery at the University of Colorado. Dr. Campbell undertook his formal fellowship training in pediatric cardiac surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical Center. Subsequently, he joined the faculty in the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado in 1981.
Dr Campbell’s major interests include congenital heart surgery, repair of congenital tracheal diseases, thoracic transplantation in infants, children and adults, and mechanical circulatory assistance.
Dr. Campbell founded the Heart Transplantation Programs at the University of Colorado Hospital and at The Children’s Hospital and continues his leadership in these fields as the Surgical Director of both programs. Under his leadership more than 450 heart transplants have been performed in these programs. He is co-founder of the Pediatric Lung Transplant Program at The Children’s Hospital and continues as the director of this program. He also founded the Mechanical Circulatory Support Program at University of Colorado Hospital and remains the director of this program.
Dr. Campbell is certified by the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and the American Board of Surgical Critical Care. He is a member of 18 professional societies including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Western Thoracic Surgical Association, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Campbell is active in the leadership of several local medical organizations including the Colorado Medical Society and serves as President of the Rocky Mountain Thoracic and Cardiovascular Society.
Dr. Campbell has authored more than 20 book chapters and has authored or co-authored more than 65 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Campbell is widely regarded as an influential surgical educator.
