Bio
Dr. Marvin Pomerantz was born in Suffern, New York in 1934. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Colgate University in New York in 1955 and his M.D. degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1959. He then completed his General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery residency training at Duke University between 1959 and 1967. During this time, he spent two years as a Clinical Associate at the National Cancer Institute, Surgery Branch, in Bethesda, Maryland. He joined the Cardiothoracic Surgery faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, Colorado as an Assistant Professor in 1967 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1971. In 1972, Dr. Pomerantz left the University to enter the private practice of cardiovascular and throracic surgery in Denver, and he remained in that practice for the next 20 years through 1992. He maintained close ties with the University of Colorado throughout this period, however, and was an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery there during his years in private practice. In 1992, Dr. Pomerantz was recruited back to head the Section of General Thoracic Surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Colorado Denver.
Dr. Pomerantz is an established and respected thoracic surgeon who is a member of multiple surgical societies and has also served in an official capacity in a number of these. Most notably, Dr. Pomerantz served as the President of the Western Thoracic Surgical Association in 1993 and is Past-Chairman of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, an honor which few outstanding thoracic surgeons in this country achieve. Currently, he serves as Historian for the W.T.S.A. Dr. Pomerantz was induced into the Colorado Thoracic Society Hall of Fame in 2001.
Dr. Pomerantz has made substantial contributions to the field of thoracic surgery, particularly general thoracic surgery. He is this country's current thoracic surgical expert on the surgical treatment of pulmonary mycobacterial disease, and his numerous publications regarding this topic are the definitive references. As the leading surgical consultant for National Jewish Medical and Research Center, perhaps the country's best known medical center for the treatment of pulmonary disease, Dr. Pomerantz has amassed an enormous experience in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis, a disease which has not become increasingly more frequent. Dr. Pomerantz is also an authority in the surgical treatment of other mycobacterial infections which are increasing dramatically in the United States.
Dr. Pomerantz is the current Director of the Center of the Surgical Treatment of Lung Infections. This is the only center of its kind in the United States.
